Machiavelli 500 Project Launch Workshop

Consul Prof Maurizio Bragagni OBE took part in the Machiavelli 500 Project Launch Workshop, held on 20–21 March 2026, in Florence. The event marked the beginning of a year-long international programme commemorating the 500th anniversary of the passing of Niccolò Machiavelli, whose work continues to shape contemporary thinking on leadership, statecraft, and organisational governance.

Bringing together scholars, policymakers, diplomats, and industry leaders, the workshop explored Machiavelli’s enduring relevance, particularly his reflections on adaptability, strategic thinking, and the responsibilities of leadership. Participants examined how these principles apply not only to political life but also to modern enterprise, diplomacy, and public service.

As one of the contributors to the book “Machiavelli, Marketing and Management Revisited, edited by Phil Harris, Andrew Lock, Patricia Rees, Consul Bragagni contributed to discussions on leadership in times of uncertainty, drawing parallels between Machiavelli’s emphasis on pragmatism and the challenges faced by today’s institutions. He highlighted the importance of ethical decision-making, resilience, and the ability to navigate rapidly changing global dynamics, qualities that Machiavelli identified as essential for those entrusted with public responsibilities.

In his interventions, Consul Bragagni noted that effective leadership requires both steadfast values and an openness to innovation. This duality, he remarked, echoes Machiavelli’s teaching that leaders must unite diverse talents and adapt to real-world conditions with clarity, courage, and integrity. Such lessons remain profoundly relevant to diplomatic work, where fostering collaboration and understanding different cultural contexts are essential to achieving common goals.

The Machiavelli 500 initiative aims to deepen the international community’s engagement with Machiavelli’s legacy through academic programmes, cultural events, and policy dialogues throughout 2026. The Consulate is proud to support this effort and to contribute to the exchange of ideas inspired by one of history’s most influential thinkers.

The Consulate extends its appreciation to the organisers, with special thanks to Prof. Phil Harris, co-organisers Arco Timmermans and Patricia Nicholls, as well as all participants of the workshop. The Consulate looks forward to further collaboration throughout the commemorative year.
